NOTES: PREGNANCY When a man and a woman have sexual intercourse, the man inserts his Penis into the woman’s vagina. When the man ejaculates, semen containing sperm enters the woman and begins to search for an egg. If a sperm enters the egg, fertilization takes place. The fertilized egg begins to divide inside of a protective shell called a zona. Once it divides a few hundred times, it escapes the zona and is called a blastestist. It embeds itself into the endometrium or lining of the uterus and continues to divide and build itself. After a few weeks, it’s called an embryo and continues to grow. After about 2-3 months or so…the embryo becomes a fetus and basically looks like a baby but only a couple inches long. An entire full term pregnancy is 40 weeks long from fertilization to birth. It is generally called “9 months” and divided into 3 sections of 3 months each…each set of 3 months being called a tri-mester. For more details….see the pregnancy section to the right |
